Flames acquire Jokinen from Coyotes

Hockey Betting Lines

03/04/2009 - Calgary, AB (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Northwest Division-leading Calgary Flames continued to deal on Wednesday, reportedly acquiring forward Olli Jokinen from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for forwards Matthew Lombardi and Brandon Prust and a first-round draft pick.

The trade is being reported by the Calgary Sun.

The Flames hold an eight-point lead over second-place Vancouver in the division standings, and after improving their blueline by getting defenseman Jordan Leopold from Colorado earlier on Wednesday, landed one of the bigger names on the trade market in Jokinen.

Jokinen has 21 goals and 21 assists in 57 games this year, missing time in late November and early December due to an upper-body injury. However, he was still second on the Coyotes in goals and points prior to the trade.

An All-Star in 2003, Jokinen was drafted third overall in 1997 by the Los Angeles Kings, but spent most of his career with the Panthers after a short stint with the Islanders as well. He was dealt to the Panthers from the Islanders in 2000 along with Roberto Luongo for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha.

The Finnish center has skated in 780 career contests with the Kings, Islanders, Panthers and Coyotes, amassing 229 goals, 274 assists and 503 points. He is in the third season of a four-year deal he signed with Florida in March of 2006.

Jokinen has never skated in an NHL playoff game in his career, but appears certain to get his first taste of postseason hockey now that he is in Calgary.

Coming off an 83-point season last year, the Coyotes acquired Jokinen from Florida in June for Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton in hopes of making the postseason for the first time since 2001-02.

Phoenix stayed in the mix for a postseason spot through most of the year in what has been a tight bottom portion of the Western Conference, however, losses in 12 of its last 15 games has the club 14th in the standings and nine points out of a playoff seed.

In exchange for Jokinen, the Coyotes get younger up front. The 26-year-old Lombardi has nine goals and 21 assists in 50 games this year and has posted 65 tallies and 102 helpers in 347 career games with the Flames.

Prust, 24, has a goal and an assist in 25 games this year after failing to notch a point in 10 games last year, his first in the NHL.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
